Although I consider myself a huge fan of Rothbard, a Facebook friend of mine recommended this particular essay (which I had not previously read) as essential to understanding the nature of the State. After reading it, I would have to agree... Rothbard excellently lays bare the predatory, parasitic quality of the State...

At one point in time (prior to 1913) we were free men in a country of opportunity and a government that was no master of the free man. Now, we are slaves to the state, coerced at the point of a gun (figurative or literal, it matters not) to hand over our property, our money, our time, and thus, our lives.
