Although I consider myself a huge fan of Rothbard, a Facebook friend of mine recommended this particular essay (which I had not previously read) as essential to understanding the nature of the State. After reading it, I would have to agree... Rothbard excellently lays bare the predatory, parasitic quality of the State...
If you have not previously considered the question of the nature and legitimacy of the State, then this essay truly is a must read as a primer on that consideration...

Great commentary from Jacob Hornberger on what it means for an American citizen to be free viz-a-viz the U.S. Government. At one point in time (prior to 1913) we were free men in a country of opportunity and a government that was no master of the free man. Now, we are slaves to the state, coerced at the point of a gun (figurative or literal, it matters not) to hand over our property, our money, our time, and thus, our lives. A truly depressing state of affairs...
